The best time to trade forex, and how to find yours

For most currency pairs, the busiest time to trade forex is when the London and New York sessions overlap: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. UTC in winter, and noon to 4 p.m. UTC in summer. That's when the most money changes hands, and spreads on the major pairs tend to be at their tightest.

That answers when the market is busiest. It doesn't answer when you trade best, which is the question your own trades can answer. This guide covers both, with session times in your local time.

Forex trading sessions

Forex trades around the clock on weekdays, as financial centers open and close one after another. The two sessions most traders care about:

  • London — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. London time
  • New York — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. New York time

Where they overlap, liquidity peaks. In OANDA's analysis of 2024 trading on six major pairs, the London–New York overlap took up about 19% of the day but more than 37% of trading volume.

Session definitions vary by an hour or so between sources and brokers. What matters is where they fall in your own day.

Session times in India, Pakistan and Indonesia

Britain and the US move their clocks; India, Pakistan and Indonesia don't. So the London and New York opens shift in your local time twice a year.

Winter (UK on GMT, US on standard time)

Summer (UK on BST, US on daylight time)

India (IST)12:3017:3017:30–21:30

Indonesia (WIB)14:0019:0019:00–23:00

The weeks in between. The US and the UK change their clocks on different dates. In 2026, the US moved its clocks on March 8 and moves them back on November 1; the UK on March 29 and October 25. In the weeks when only one of them has changed, New York opens on its summer time while London is still on winter time, and the overlap runs an hour longer than usual.

Your MetaTrader clock is probably not your clock

MetaTrader shows every trade in your broker's server time, not your local time. Many brokers run their servers on GMT+2 or GMT+3; Exness, for example, runs on GMT+0. Line your MT history up against the table above and you can be hours off.

So before you decide which session suits you, put your trades in your own time zone. In TradeBB that's one setting, and every report follows it.

When is the best time to trade gold?

Gold trades against the dollar, so it tends to be most active when London and New York are both open, and around major US economic releases in the New York morning. The overlap times in the tables above are a reasonable starting point for gold too.

But the same caveat applies: whether those hours are good for you is in your own results, not in the market's.

How to find your own best time to trade

The busiest hours aren't automatically your best ones. Volatility suits some setups and wrecks others, and you may simply trade better when you're fresh. Your trade history can tell you.

  1. Get a few weeks of trades in one place — sync your MetaTrader account or upload your history
  2. Set your time zone — so 9 p.m. in your report means 9 p.m. where you are
  3. Look at win rate and profit by hour — which hours make money for you, and which quietly cost it
  4. Look at the day of the week — some traders do worse on Mondays or Fridays
  5. Filter to one window — for example, only trades entered in the first two hours after London opens, and compare them with the rest
  6. Don't decide on a handful of trades — wait until each hour you compare has enough trades to mean something

Frequently asked questions

1:30 p.m. IST in winter and 12:30 p.m. IST in summer, when the UK is on British Summer Time.

For the major pairs, the London–New York overlap: 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. IST in winter, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. IST in summer. Whether those are your best hours depends on how you trade, which your own trade history can show.

Yes, if you live somewhere without it. The London and New York opens move an hour in your local time when the UK and US change their clocks, and for a few weeks a year the two are out of step.

It's usually quieter for the major European and US pairs, which suits some strategies and not others. Pairs with the yen or the Australian dollar can be more active then.
