How profit factor is calculated

Profit factor compares what your winning trades made with what your losing trades lost. TradeBB uses net results, after commissions, fees and swap.

Profit factor = total net profit of winning trades ÷ total net loss of losing trades

The loss side is counted as a positive number, so the result is always zero or more.

  • Above 1 — your winners made more than your losers lost
  • Exactly 1 — they cancel out
  • Below 1 — your losers lost more

Break-even trades don't affect it. If there are no losing trades in the selection, there's nothing to divide by, so profit factor can't be calculated and shows a dash (-).

Example (sample account, three months)

Winning trades171, averaging $58.40 → $9,986.40
Losing trades139, averaging −$61.20 → $8,506.80 lost
Profit factor9,986.40 ÷ 8,506.80 = 1.17

So for every $1 lost, these trades made $1.17.

Why it's lower than some other tools show

Many platforms calculate profit factor before costs. Because TradeBB takes commissions, fees and swap out first, every winner is a little smaller and every loser a little bigger, so the same trades show a lower profit factor here. The net figure is the one that matches your account.
